By training I am an illustrator, and murals to me are illustrations on a grand scale.  As an illustration in a book enhances the story, a mural in your home enhances your lifestyle adding to the atmosphere you provide for your family and project to your guests.  Murals in public places such as schools can do the same but they can also serve as teaching tools.  They can provide visual information about the purpose of an area and the philosophy or policies of the organization.  They can promote enthusiasm or provide pure entertainment and enhance the value of your home or business.

Maybe it's the fact that mural painting is such a vast, dirty, physically toilsome labor that gives me such a feeling of accomplishment when I complete one.  I know I've taken on a monumental task and done it the hard way with God's help, and it works..
